Tom Weiler Comments on Dean Phillips Letter Urging Speaker Pelosi to Allow Votes on the House Floor on Public Safety Related Legislation for Phillips’ Own Political Benefit

Plymouth, MN – Tom Weiler released the following statement in response to a letter (1) from Congressman Dean Phillips to Speaker Pelosi urging her to bring legislation to the House floor to allow vulnerable Democrats, like himself, to demonstrate support of law enforcement as the mid-terms approach.

“Congressman Phillips’ election year flip-flop on supporting the police, and his letter to Speaker Pelosi to request police-related legislation be brought to the House floor for his own political benefit, is insulting and disrespectful to the thousands of Minnesotans who have been victims of violent crimes since the summer of 2020. Where was Congressman Phillips’ resolve to support our law enforcement when the streets of Minneapolis were on fire in 2020? Congressman Phillips voted (2) to effectively defund the police and take away legal protections for law enforcement in 2021. Now, in 2022, in a ‘vulnerable’ re-election bid, Congressman Phillips writes in his letter that if these bills are not brought to the floor, ‘it would prevent Members from publicly showing their support for law enforcement.’”

Mr. Weiler continued, “This letter demonstrates Congressman Phillips’ motivation for pushing public safety-related legislation. He is not focused on Minnesota victims of crime, preventing more crime, or better resourcing law enforcement, but rather focuses on the ‘opportunity to show’ voters he cares about the crime wave this election year. Congressman Phillips doesn’t have a record of supporting our police, he only wants the opportunity to tell you that he supports them.”
